How to manage car parts stock

Q&A • Parts

How do I keep track of the parts used on each car?

Parts per car are tracked on the work order: each fitted part is a line, with quantity and price. That shows consumption per car. It does not show how many parts are left in your store; for that you need a separate record.

Short answer

  1. Put each fitted part as a line on the car's work order, with quantity and price.
  2. The catalogue can keep typical parts with a default price, so you can pick them quickly.
  3. The line on the order shows who asked for the part and which car it went into.
  4. Physical stock (quantities, goods receipts, alerts) is not in 4mygarage; keep it in a sheet or a stock program.
  5. Compare parts bought with parts fitted on orders each month, to catch differences.

How the per-car record looks

  1. Open the work order for that vehicle.
  2. Add the part from the catalogue or manually, with quantity and price.
  3. Check the total on the lines and save the order.

What 4mygarage does not track

  • Stock quantities and goods receipts.
  • Minimum-stock or reorder alerts.
  • Stock valuation methods, such as FIFO.
